717 Main Elements of Jiu Jitsu Training
There are many different areas to Jiu Jitsu Training, however, different styles have evolved and each one can have a slightly different focus than another, concentrating on different areas of the Art.
Our Style is directed towards Self Defense, others may be more traditional or competitive. The following elements are from our particular style covers but many elements are common amongst most organizations.
- Targeting
- Striking
- Stances / Movement / Defense
- Escape Techniques

#1 Targeting –
This involves learning the weak and sensitive areas of the body such as Pressure Points and Motor Nerve Points. The targets can cause the most impact with the least amount of effort.
There are so many effective Targets Scattered all over the body, knowledge of their location, together with effective striking method will definitely gain you a distinct advantage in a physical confrontation.
#2 Striking –
Karate is one of the Fundamental Components of Jiu-Jitsu Training. By knowing how to use the body to maximize the effect of a strike can make it totally devastating.
Use of Kicks, Punches, Elbows, knees and so on, whilst utilizing sound mechanical technique to engage the full force of the body whilst striking is what makes them so effective.
#3 Stance / Movement / Defense –
In order to Strike effectively a solid base is required, this comes from learning effective stances and correct movement. It also helps you to move from one technique to another more smoothly.
Defensive techniques such as blocking are based on instinctive reactions so that we are developing on simple reactions that you already do naturally.
#4 Escape Techniques –
Just as it sounds these are Techniques to escape from Holds. We work around a common concept to avoid teaching a specific technique to match a specific Hold. This makes the techniques much easier to recall in a high stress situation.
#5 Throwing (Take-Downs) -
This is the area of Jiu Jitsu Training that many people would initially think that Jiu Jitsu is restricted to. There are a handful of basic throws but many, many variations on each which gives the appearance that there are hundreds of different throws.
By learning how to use your opponents momentum, by discovering how to use leverage effectively, by understanding the limited range of motion that people have in their joints and how to affect balance all combine for Super effective throwing, regardless of your size and strength.
#6 Ground Defense –
Ground Defense is the Grappling aspect of Jiu Jitsu Training, it involves the techniques that are used when a fight goes to the ground, there are some super effective techniques to utilize here both in defense and attack.
#7 Joint Locks –
To gain full control of another person by use of any of the major joints in the body right from Finger Locks, Wrist Locks, Arm Bars, Shoulder Locks and leg locks is a powerful skill to discover.
Additional Elements –
Other aspects of Jiu-Jitsu Training include Weapons Defense, the Weapon of Opportunity, Pressure Point Control Tactics, Chokes, Tactical Jaw Control, High Stress Training and Escorts.
You can see that Jiu Jitsu training covers many areas of Martial arts and it should become more obvious how this broad based Art forms the basis of other arts such as Judo (Throwing Techniques), Aikido (Joint Techniques) and Karate (Striking Techniques).
